How to Know if Your iPhone Battery Needs Replacement

The symptoms that mean hardware, the ones that mean software, and the two-minute check in Settings.

How to Know if Your iPhone Battery Needs Replacement

Check Settings first, it takes two minutes

Open Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. Two things matter. Maximum Capacity is the battery’s current capacity as a percentage of new; Apple recommends service at 80% or below. On the iPhone 15 and later, Cycle Count shows how many full charges the battery has done; the 14 and earlier are rated for 500 cycles, the 15 and later for 1,000. If you see a message that says “Service” or “Important Battery Message”, iOS has already decided the battery is degraded.

The eight signs

  1. It dies before the evening on the same usage that used to last all day.
  2. Sudden shutdowns at 20 to 40%, especially in cold weather or when the camera or a game opens. The battery cannot deliver peak current any more.
  3. The percentage jumps, for example from 45% to 15% in a minute, or the phone restarts and shows a different level.
  4. It only works on the charger, or turns off the moment you unplug it.
  5. Slow, laggy performance that improves when plugged in. iOS throttles the processor on worn batteries to prevent shutdowns.
  6. Heat while charging that was not there before.
  7. The screen is lifting at one edge, or the phone no longer sits flat. This is a swollen battery: stop using the phone and bring it in the same day.
  8. Battery Health below 80%, or the “Service” message, even if none of the above has started yet.

Symptoms that are usually not the battery

A phone that drains fast right after an iOS update is usually re-indexing photos and files for a day or two. A drain that started when you installed a particular app is that app: check Settings → Battery for the list. A phone that will not charge at all with the cable, but charges wirelessly, is the charging port, not the battery. And a phone that shows 100% then dies instantly after a fall may have a damaged battery connector rather than a worn cell. The free diagnosis at the shop separates these before you pay for anything.

What happens if you wait

A worn battery is inconvenient; a swollen one is dangerous and will crack the screen or back glass from the inside, turning a cheap repair into an expensive one. For an ordinary worn battery, waiting costs you screen time and speed, and increases the chance of a shutdown at the wrong moment. There is no benefit to waiting once Maximum Capacity is under 80%.

Frequently asked questions

No. 85% is normal wear and the phone will behave normally. Apple recommends service at 80% or below, and most people notice the difference in screen time somewhere between 80 and 84%.

Draining to 0% and charging to 100% once can fix a wrong percentage reading, but it does not restore capacity. If Maximum Capacity is under 80%, only a new cell helps.

No. The storage is untouched. A backup is still good practice before any repair.
