Why the same crack costs different amounts

The panel is the price. LCD iPhones (8, SE, XR, 11) use cheaper displays than OLED iPhones (X, XS, 12 and later), and Pro models with 120 Hz ProMotion panels cost the most. Within each model you then choose a grade: aftermarket (an LCD-type panel made for OLED phones, the floor above), OEM-grade (a new OLED built to Apple’s specification, typically 1.5 to 2 times the floor) or original (a genuine Apple panel, the top of the range). Glass-only vs full display

If the glass is cracked but the display and touch work perfectly, some shops offer a “glass-only” repair where the outer glass is separated from the OLED with a laminating machine. It is cheaper but risky on OLED panels and rarely done well outside specialist labs; a slip destroys the panel. We recommend a full display assembly for OLED iPhones and quote glass-only work only where it is genuinely safe. The full assembly also comes with a new frame gasket, which restores water resistance.

Extras that can appear on the quote

• Bent frame from the drop, which must be straightened so the new panel seats flat.
• Torn Face ID flex or earpiece flex, which sit on the display and are sometimes damaged in the same fall.
• Back glass, a separate repair, cheaper on the iPhone 14 and later where the panel is removable.

Repair or replace?

A rule that holds up: if the repair costs less than a third of what the phone would sell for repaired, repair it. That covers almost every iPhone 11 and later. For an iPhone 8 with a cracked screen and a tired battery, a screen plus battery is still usually cheaper than a good used replacement, but we will tell you honestly at the counter if it is not.
