Phone Speaker or Microphone Not Working: What to Check First

Settings, Bluetooth and dust first, then a two-minute test that finds the faulty part.

Phone Speaker or Microphone Not Working: What to Check First

Rule out the simple causes

Before blaming the hardware, check three things. Bluetooth: turn it off. A connected earbud, car or speaker silently takes over the audio, and this is the single most common “broken speaker” we see. Volume and silent mode: on iPhone, the Ring/Silent switch or Action button controls the ringer, while media volume is separate; on Android, check the call, media and ring sliders separately. One app or everything: if sound fails only in WhatsApp or only in one game, check that app’s permissions and settings, then update or reinstall it.

Dust: the Lahore problem

Speaker and microphone grilles collect lint, dust and smog residue, especially on a phone that lives in a pocket. A muffled earpiece or a bottom speaker that has slowly got quieter is often just blocked. Power off and brush the grilles gently with a dry, soft toothbrush, at an angle so dirt falls out rather than in. Do not push pins, needles or toothpicks into the holes: the mesh behind them tears easily and the microphone membrane sits just behind it. Do not use compressed air at close range either; it can push dust deeper and damage the membrane.

A two-minute test that finds the faulty part

Phones have several microphones and two speakers, and each test uses different ones.

  • Bottom microphone: record a voice memo, then play it back. Muffled or silent means the bottom mic or its grille.
  • Front microphone: record a short front-camera video and play it back.
  • Rear microphone: record a rear-camera video.
  • Loudspeaker: play a ringtone in sound settings at full volume.
  • Earpiece: make a call with the phone held to your ear, speakerphone off.

On Samsung phones, dialling *#0*# opens a hardware test menu with speaker and receiver tests; on Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco, *#*#6484#*#* opens a similar menu. If one test fails and the others pass, you know exactly which part needs replacing.

After water

A speaker that sounds crackly or quiet after the phone got wet often recovers as it dries. Turn the phone off, stand it with the speaker facing down, and leave it for a few hours; do not use heat or a hair dryer. If it is still distorted the next day, or other symptoms appear, follow our wet iPhone guide or the Android water damage guide, because liquid that reached the speaker may have reached the board too.

When it is a hardware fault

If the grille is clean and one of the tests above still fails, the part has failed or a connector has worked loose after a drop. Speakers, earpieces and microphones are among the cheapest repairs: from Rs 1,200 on iPhone and Rs 1,000 on Android at our shop, usually finished in 30 to 60 minutes while you wait. On some Android phones the bottom microphone is soldered to the charging board, so the fix is a replacement charging board, which we quote before starting.

Get it checked

Bring the phone to Hassan Tower, Gulberg III, near Hafeez Center. We run the same tests in front of you, clean the grilles if that is all it needs, and only quote a part if one has actually failed. You can see starting prices for every model in our repair cost estimator.

Frequently asked questions

On a normal call the phone uses the bottom microphone; on speakerphone it may use others. Test the bottom mic with a voice memo. It is usually a blocked grille or a failed bottom microphone.

Yes. A protector without an earpiece cut-out, or a thick case covering the bottom grilles, can muffle calls. Try without them before anything else.

Usually 30 to 60 minutes while you wait for iPhones and most Android phones.
