Android Phone Water Damage: What to Do
The first steps, the Samsung moisture warning, and why speed matters more on budget phones.
First aid, same as any phone
- Power off immediately and do not turn it back on.
- Do not charge it. On Samsung, the phone may refuse anyway with a Moisture Detected warning; respect it.
- Remove the SIM tray, memory card and case. Wipe the outside.
- Hold it port-down and tap out water from the USB-C port and speakers.
- No rice, no hair dryer, no oven.
- Bring it in the same day. Recovery odds fall steeply after 48 hours.
Why budget phones are less forgiving
Galaxy S and Z series, Pixels and some OnePlus models carry IP67 or IP68 ratings with gaskets around every opening. Most A-series, Redmi, Oppo A, Vivo Y, Infinix and Tecno phones have no rating at all, or a splash rating, and a plastic back that is simply clipped on. Water goes straight in, reaches the board, and corrodes faster because these boards are less coated. The upside is that they open easily and clean quickly if brought in fast, and parts are cheap if something needs replacing.
The Samsung Moisture Detected warning
Galaxy phones have a moisture sensor in the USB-C port and will refuse to charge while it triggers. Dry the port facing down for a few hours and restart. If the warning persists on a dry phone, the pins have corroded and the charging sub-board needs cleaning or replacing. Do not defeat the warning with a wireless charger while the phone is still wet inside; charging a wet board is what causes permanent damage.
What the repair involves
We open the phone, disconnect the battery, and clean the main board and sub-boards in an ultrasonic bath, then inspect under magnification and replace corroded components. Displays, batteries and cameras damaged by the water are quoted separately. Diagnosis is free, and water damage service starts from Rs 2,000.
