Phone Charging Slowly? Here’s Why
Adapter, cable, port, heat, software or battery: how to find which one is slowing you down.
Rule out the charger in one minute
Most slow charging is the adapter. A 5 W cube, the small square kind, takes three hours to fill a modern phone. iPhones charge fastest from a 20 W or higher USB-C PD adapter; Samsung and most Android flagships want 25 to 45 W PD with PPS; Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and Realme fast charging needs their own adapter and cable, and fall to slow mode on anything else. Look at the adapter’s label: if it says 5 V 1 A, that is your answer. Plug into a wall socket, not a laptop USB port or a car adapter of unknown quality.
Then the cable
Cables have ratings too. A thin, cheap USB-C cable often carries 3 A at most and no PD negotiation, so a 45 W charger delivers 10 W through it. Frayed ends and bent connectors also drop the current. Test with a cable known to fast-charge another phone. Lightning cables that are not MFi-certified frequently fall back to slow charging or show “Accessory Not Supported”.
The port
Lint packed into the port stops the plug seating fully, so only some pins make contact and the phone negotiates a slow rate or charges intermittently. Look in with a torch and clean gently with a wooden toothpick. If the plug is loose or only works at an angle after cleaning, the port assembly is worn; replacement is a 30 to 60 minute job. See iPhone not charging or Samsung not charging for the full checklists.
Heat and software slow charging on purpose
Every phone slows charging when it is hot to protect the battery: charging in the sun, in a thick case, or while gaming can halve the rate. Optimized Battery Charging on iPhone and Adaptive or Protect Battery on Samsung deliberately hold the level at 80 or 85% overnight or permanently; that is a setting. Apps running in the background, a hotspot, or a screen left on at full brightness all eat into the charge going in. Charge with the screen off for a fair test.
When it is the battery
A worn battery accepts charge more slowly near the top and the percentage may crawl from 80 to 100 for an hour. If Battery Health is under 80% (iPhone) or the phone is over two years old and also drains fast, slow charging is a symptom of the cell, not the charger. Battery replacement starts from Rs 1,500 on Android and Rs 1,800 on iPhone at APEX. The estimator has your model.
